This week we discussed worth, identity, and vulnerability and you might want to go back and spend extra time on those questions.
Here are other videos and essays that help us re-consider our sacred cow, the image we have of who we are and how we are supposed to be.
IO Tillet Wright / 50 Shades of Gay
The talk is more than about being gay, it is about identity and boxes. Sexual identity is one of many boxes and Wright discovers it doesn’t bind people together as closely as you might think. Sexual identity is more of the grown-up version of your favorite flavor of Kool-Aid. When we are kids, if we like the same flavor of Kool-Aid we are besties until I find out you also like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I don’t.
You may have a very personal reaction to her description of the gay marriage struggle. What interests me is her discussion of complete acceptance by her parents and her rejection of boxes as she looked for her identity.
How would you show yourself if you were guaranteed acceptance?
Are there parts of you that are unacceptable to your closest circle of intimates?
When you think about your identity, what is true and what is not?
When you think about accepting yourself, completely, what happens in your body?
Who are you?
